Photographing a Bat Mitzvah at The Plaza Hotel: A Family Milestone to Remember
Some events you photograph because they are beautiful.
Others you photograph because they matter.
A Bat Mitzvah is always the second kind.
Recently, we had the privilege of documenting a truly unforgettable celebration at The Plaza Hotel for Scarlett, the daughter of Rebecca Hessel Cohen, founder of LoveShackFancy.
While the evening quickly captured attention online for its pink-filled ballroom and extraordinary design, what stood out most through my lens was something far more meaningful: a family marking a once-in-a-lifetime milestone together.
As an event photographer in New York, these are the moments I care most about preserving.
Why Bat Mitzvah Photography Matters
A Bat Mitzvah is more than a celebration.
It marks the moment when a young woman steps into a new chapter of her life within the Jewish tradition — taking on new responsibilities, reading from the Torah, and being recognized as part of the adult community.
For families, it represents years of growth, love, and guidance coming full circle in one day.
From a photographer’s perspective, the goal isn’t simply documenting décor or details.
It’s capturing:
Pride on a parent’s face
A child realizing the significance of the moment
Generations gathered together in one room
These are the images families will revisit for decades.
A Bat Mitzvah Weekend at The Plaza Hotel
The celebration began the evening before the ceremony with a Shabbat dinner, an intimate gathering filled with candlelight, conversation, and family traditions.
Tables were adorned with soft pink florals and elegant menus, setting the tone for a weekend that balanced deeply meaningful rituals with joyful celebration.
One particularly special moment before the ceremony was the unveiling of a custom embroidered Torah cover, created specifically for Scarlett’s service and monogrammed with her initials.
Photographing details like this is important because they tell the story of intention.
Every stitch, every design choice reflects how much thought a family pours into honoring this milestone.
Photographing the Bat Mitzvah Ceremony
The ceremony itself is always one of the most emotional parts of the day.
There is a quiet reverence when a child stands at the bimah and reads from the Torah — a moment that symbolizes years of learning and preparation.
A Ballroom Transformation at The Plaza
After the ceremony, the celebration moved into the iconic ballroom at The Plaza Hotel.
Guests arrived along a pink carpet before entering a space completely transformed into “Club Cohen.”
The room was filled with:
-pink floral installations
-chandelier-style table décor
-sparkling lighting across the ballroom
And as the evening began, the energy shifted from reflection to celebration.
Music filled the room, friends danced together, and one of the most iconic traditions of Jewish celebrations took place: the chair lift, where Scarlett was lifted into the air while guests danced around her.
Moments like this are some of my favorite to photograph because they capture pure joy — laughter, movement, and the feeling that everyone in the room is sharing the same happiness.
The Role of Photography in Family Milestones
Events like this remind me why family photography matters so much.
Years from now, the flowers and décor will fade from memory.
But photographs will still hold:
-the expression on Scarlett’s face when she entered the ballroom
-the pride of her parents
-the joy of friends surrounding her on the dance floor
For families celebrating a Bar or Bat Mitzvah in New York, photography becomes the lasting record of a moment that can never be recreated.
Documenting the Moments That Matter
Luxury events often receive attention for their scale or beauty.
But from behind the camera, what matters most is something much simpler: family, tradition, and the passage of time.
A Bat Mitzvah represents one of the most meaningful milestones in a family’s life — and being trusted to capture it is something I never take lightly.
Because long after the music stops and the ballroom lights dim, these photographs will be the way families return to that moment again and again.
